Alarm Systems – Did You Know?

  • In 2001, 99% of all alarm calls were false.

  • The majority of false alarm calls are caused by human error.

  • False alarms are more than an inconvenience, they take deputies away from community activities and real emergencies.

  • Habitual false alarms lead neighbors to ignore the alarm, causing the system to be less credible.

  • Responses to false alarms put citizens and responding deputies in potential danger.

Alarm Systems – Things You Can/Should Do

  • Affix Alarm System Decal to the front door or front window.

  • Make sure your house or business numbers are clearly visible from the street, day or night.

  • Secure all doors and windows before arming system.

  • Know your system and share the knowledge with those who need to know. Be sure your callout has the code and instructions to operate the system.

  • Be sure everyone in your home or business knows the system and codes, and knows what to do in an inadvertent activation.

  • Keep your system maintained. Change batteries at least once a year.

  • Rooms with motion sensors should be free of pets, wind and party decorations. Turn off ceiling fans. Keep motion sensors dust free.

  • TEST YOUR ALARM SYSTEM MONTHLY. Important: Notify your alarm monitoring company prior to conducting the test.

What is a False Alarm?
"False Alarm" means an alarm signal indicating a burglary, robbery, fire, emergency medical or other emergency situation that is reasonably expected to elicit a response by a law enforcement agency, a fire agency, an emergency medical agency or other emergency response agency, when a situation requiring such response does not in fact exist, but does not include an alarm signal caused by violent conditions of nature or other extraordinary circumstances not reasonably contemplated by the alarm user nor subject to control by the alarm business operator or alarm user.
