SJSO encourages the citizens of St. Johns County to engrave their personal belongings with an electric engraver. This engraving should be done in 2 different locations on each item with one of these locations being hidden from obvious view. You may use your Driver’s License Number or any alfa-numeric identifier (not Social Security Number) that would link an item to you.

Items that should be considered for engraving include but are not limited to:

TV sets, Stereo Receivers, VCR’s, CD and DVD players, Satellite Receivers, Radios, Home Theater Systems, Camera Equipment, Computers and Monitors.

In addition to the engraving, it would be wise to record the Serial and Model Numbers of these items and keep them in a safe place.

If necessary, the SJSO Crime Prevention Section will lend an engraver to those who need it.

TIP: Items such as CD’s and DVD’s, which should not be engraved, should be marked with a florescent coloring such as nail polish or permanent marker. While this marking could be removed, it is not likely that all signs of it will be taken off, and if stolen, this would be an identifying feature, as CD’s and DVD’s do not have Serial Numbers and they all look the same. Do not mark the programmed side of the disc.

In addition, there are other items, such as fine jewelry, watches, antiques and family heirlooms, which cannot or should not be marked. It is a good idea to photograph such items with a digital camera, video camera, or film camera and keep the CD, video, or pictures in a safe location.
