Support Services (SSVS) – Under direction of Col Art May Director, and Major Chuck West, Deputy Director, SSVS provides community and special services throughout the county and includes the Special Operations and Training Bureau, Community Services Bureau, and Communications Bureau. Email or phone amay@sjso.org / 8106639 cwest@sjso.org / 810-6798

Special Operations – Under command of the Lt Smith Tennyson, Special Ops consists of the S.W.A.T., Air Unit, Marine Unit, Bomb Squad, Dive Team, Public Service Assistants (PSA’s), Community Oriented Policing, Beach Patrol, Honor Guard, and security for the new commercial airlines at the St Augustine Airport. In addition, The Training Section is responsible for the continuing training of all full and part-time employees of the St Johns County Sheriff’s office. E-mail or call 810-3621 mtennyson@sjso.org.

Public Service Assistants – (PSA’s) are the civilian reinforcements utilized to augment not only the road patrol deputies but also to provide administrative assistance. The PSA program began in the mid 1990’s and was originally known as The Beach Rangers.  Their main goal at the time was to provide extra patrols on the beaches of St. Johns County during the summer months.

While on the road, PSA’s respond to calls for service such as delayed burglaries and thefts as well as providing help for disabled vehicles and their occupants.  Traffic control is also provided at crash scenes, as well as other scenes to relieve deputies to handle other incoming calls. During the warmer months, PSA’s still provide another law enforcement presence on the beaches of St. Johns County.  During the holiday season, PSA’s patrol shopping center parking lots for the added safety of our citizens. When schools are in session, PSA’s provide traffic control giving an additional measure of visibility. PSA’s are also assigned to our Administrative Division to assist in maintaining current information on the SJSO website and also to keep historical records up to date.

PSA’s are part-time employees and are a viable force multiplier for the Sheriff’s Office. Most PSA’s are retired and bring with them vast knowledge and experience from various careers.

Community Oriented Policing (COPS) – Patrol deputies placed in the community to help the citizens of that area with a goal to develop closer ties within the community in a joint effort to prevent and deter criminal activity.

Community Services Bureau – Under the command of Captain Herb Mier, Community Services consist of the Youth Services Unit and Traffic Unit. hmier@sjso.org / 209-0913

Traffic Section – Responsible for investigating traffic problems, traffic violations, and traffic crashes, and establishes traffic programs to promote safe driving. To find out more about the Traffic Section call (904) 810-6776 send an email to: sgreene@sjso.org or submit a Traffic Report Form.

Youth Services
includes PAL, Explorer Post 911, YRD’s, ACE, Truancy, and Teen Driving Programs.

  • Youth Resource Deputies (YRD’s) — conduct programming in the county schools and serve as a resource to faculty, staff, students, and parents, and also includes the Substance Abuse Violence Education ( S.A.V.E.) program to all fifth grade students. Youth Resource Deputies may also fingerprint students as a service to parents as a means of identification in the event of a missing/lost child. Email: blee@sjso.org

  • Police Athletic League (PAL) is a program designed to bring law enforcement officers and youth together in a positive atmosphere to promote trust and respect for each other. PAL deputies work within the school system to set up sport and competition events to help the youths gain self-esteem.

  • Teen Driving Programs – With an emphasis on defensive driving and situational awareness, is a proven method to reduce injury, death and property damage from automobile accidents involving youthful drivers. The "Drivers Ed" programs that trained so many generations of St. Johns County residents are gone, dropped due to budget constraints.

  • Explorer Post 911 – Helping local young people between the ages of 14 and 21 learn about law enforcement through instructional activities.

Communications Bureau – Under command of Lt. Cheryl Blalock and Lt. Robin Reems,  dispatches calls for service to road deputies and Public Service Assistants as well as receiving incoming 911 calls and non-emergency calls to the agency. Email cblalock@sjso.org or rreams@sjso.org

The Special Projects Section includes the Alarm Registration Program. Click here to learn more about Alarm Registration and to register on-line.
