Phillip Lane – 41 year old murder victim on March 4, 1992. Better known as "Troll", Phillip Lane lived and died under the State Road 312 (St. Johns County) bridge.
Lane was hard working and friendly. He enjoyed buying beers for strangers. Lane hung out at Jim's Sports Bar in St. Augustine, Florida. Little is known about his life prior to coming to St. Johns County. On the evening of Lane's murder, he cashed his $40 paycheck and drank a few beers with other homeless men. Lane then went to Jim's Sports Bar and left around 10:00 pm. Witnesses saw Lane walk to a nearby supermarket (Albertson's) and purchase more beer. He then returned to his campsite which he shared with Tony McKenzie, 32. After a while a pickup truck pulled up with two white males in their late 20's. Lane and McKenzie invited them to stay.
Around 1:30 am the two white males volunteered to go get more beer. When they returned they asked Lane to pay for the beer. He said he didn't have any more money. Then, without explanation, one of the white males pulled out a gun and shot Lane. He died instantly. The two men got in their truck and drove off. McKenzie was able to provide a description for the composite (left) of one of the white males.
Further questioning of McKenzie has not been available as he has disappeared since this incident. A gasoline truck driver witnessed the pickup truck leaving the SR 312 bridge area that night. He remembered it cut him off and described it as, "a tan or dirty white older model, full-sized pickup, probably from 1970s or early 1980s with a white front bumper, wide hood, large off-road tires and a step-side."
