I-95 Incident 8/14/2019

Shortly after 6:00 pm, this evening, deputies with the SJC Sheriff’s Office received a BOLO for a reckless driver southbound on I-95. A SJC Deputy was in the area of State Road 16 / I-95 when he observed a vehicle matching that description disabled on the side of State Road 16. The deputy stopped and exited his vehicle to check on the occupants and realized driver was bleeding profusely and in need of medical attention. The male driver exited his vehicle and engaged in a physical struggle with the deputy. Simultaneously, a female passenger in the vehicle exited and walked away, posing no threat to the deputy and did not appear injured.

The male who was physically fighting with the deputy then attempted to steal a motorcycle from a citizen who had stopped to assist the deputy. An off-duty deputy in an unmarked vehicle then arrived at the scene and went to the rear of his vehicle to gather equipment necessary to secure the man and as he did the suspect was able to break away from the deputies and get behind the wheel of the unmarked SJSO vehicle. As the man began to drive away, the deputies began pursuing the now stolen vehicle southbound on I-95.

Deputies also received information that the disabled car and suspect were involved in a series of criminal events in Duval County, where he is believed to have sustained his injuries.

The incident continued on I-95 when deputies decided to perform a PIT Maneuver to stop the vehicle. The PIT was performed and the vehicle came to rest in the center lane of I-95, near the southbound rest areas, near SR 206. The subject was secured without further incident and SJC Fire/Rescue was called as the subject was in need of medical treatment for his previously obtained injuries.

The suspect was transported to an area hospital in critical condition. The SJC Sheriff’s Office is coordinating with The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and Florida Highway Patrol as the investigation continues.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office will be providing a separate briefing on the events that occurred in their jurisdiction.
