30+ Arrested During Dual Operations Targeting Subjects Who Use the Internet to Prey on Children and Registered Sexual Offenders and Predators Who Are Not in Compliance With Statutory Requirements

The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office in partnership with local, state, and federal agencies arrested 30+ offenders during Operation Safe Passage and Operation Unified Watch.  

Operation Safe Passage (September 17-20) is an undercover operation targeting subjects who use the internet to prey on children. Detectives posed as children on popular websites and social media platforms and engaged in conversations. In some conversations, predators lied about their own ages, asked for photos and videos of a child, and even offered to pay for prostitution. The predators traveled from surrounding areas including St. Johns, Duval, Clay, and Volusia counties to meet a child but were quickly taken into custody by law enforcement. During the four-day operation, 17 arrests were made:

Operation Safe Passage was in partnership with St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office, Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), Port Orange Police Department, North Florida ICAC Task Force, Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, State Attorney’s Office 7th Judicial Circuit of Florida, Nassau County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Lake City Police Department, and Intercept Task Force.

Operation Unified Watch (September 22-25) is a compliance operation focusing on registered sexual offenders and predators in St. Johns County. The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit, in partnership with the St. Augustine Police Department, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and Florida Department of Corrections contacted 249 registered sex offenders and predators to ensure these individuals are complying with all laws, local ordinances, and supervision conditions associated with their status. 19 arrests were made for violations including Failure to Register Vehicle Information, Providing False Registration Information, Failure to Comply with Registration Laws, Failure to Report Email Address Internet Identifiers, and Failure to Maintain an Identification Card as Required. The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office has 36 outstanding warrants and expects more arrests soon because of Operation Unified Watch.
