HR-218 Retired Law Enforcement Officer Firearms Qualification

The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office offers an HR-218 qualification that is designed to satisfy the requirement of the Law Enforcement Officer’s Safety Act of 2004 for retired officers. After passing the 38-round course your certificate is good for one year from the date of issuance.  (See video below for instructions on the 38-round FDLE Qualification Course.)

The course is held two (2) times a year:

  • Spring (TBD)
  • Fall — September 21, 2026, 0800–1200 

The certification course will take place at our range located at 911 Law Enforcement Way, St. Augustine, Florida 32092.

To participate within the course, you must be a retired officer residing in St. Johns County. There is no cost for participation.

Requirements

You are required to bring the following items on the day of qualification:

  • A retired law enforcement identification card. Candidate must have retired in good standing.
  • A Florida Driver’s License or another form of photo identification.
  • A serviceable weapon and functioning holster to properly secure your weapon during the courses of fire.
  • No revolvers can be utilized.
  • Semi-automatic handguns must have six (6) round capacity with minimum of two (2) magazines
  • Holster must be a design that allows drawing and holstering the weapon in a safe manner. No cross drawn, shoulder holsters, pouches, packs, etc. can be utilized as a holster.
  • A minimum of 40 rounds of ammunition.
  • Eye and ear protection.

To register for the course, please use the application provided below, ensuring all fields are completed and both the notarized FDLE Background Waiver Form and your retired credentials are attached.

 Once your background is completed, you will receive an email from our staff confirming you are approved to attend.
